A film about Bobby Kennedy, written and directed by the son of an actor who has made a career of playing American presidents, will be one of the gala film presentations at Cinéfest this year.
Bobby, written and directed Emilio Estevez, son of Martin
Sheen, revisits the events surrounding the night Senator Robert
F. Kennedy was killed on June 4, 1968.
Sheen, who played the president on the television show The
West Wing and who has portrayed John F. Kennedy on film, has a
role in the movie, which also stars Anthony Hopkins, Sharon
Stone, Demi Moore and Helen Hunt.
Bobby screens Saturday, Sept. 23.
Cinefest staff announced the movie lineup at a news conference Thursday.
A political thriller filmed in Johannesburg, South Africa and
Mozambique, Catch a Fire is the gala presentation on Sept. 18.
It is based on a real life story of an apolitical oil refinery
worker and soccer player who is brutalized by a
government-sanctioned terror squad.
For those who enjoy watching real life stories, Cinefest
will be showing several "must-not-miss documentaries." These
include American Hardcore, about the 1980s American punk rock
scene; a film which examines the F word; and Iraq in Fragments,
which tells the story of this country through the eyes of a
young boy.
This year's film festival runs from Sept. 16 to 24. Other gala
presentation films include Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont (Sept.
21), which stars Joan Plowright. She plays an elderly woman who
moves from Scotland to London to be closer to her grandson. Le
Secret De Ma Mère (Sept. 22) takes place at a wake during a
snowstorm in Montreal on New Year's Day.
The festival will open Sunday, Sept. 17 with a film shot in
Wawa called Snowcake starring Alan Rickman and Sigourney
Weaver.
The final film of the festival will be a movie directed by
Canadian Sarah Polley. Away from Her is based on a short story
by Alice Munro dealing with Alzheimer's disease.
