Highly sophisticated, advanced mining technology will play an essential role in one company’s dream to settle the first humans on the red planet.

Joseph Palaia, vice-president of operations and research and development for Massachusetts-based 4Frontiers.com, said his company has plans to build the first manned headquarters for humans on Mars and the plan, if everything falls into place, would see it happen within 15 years.

Palaia was one of 110 delegates attending the Northern Centre for Advanced Technology (NORCAT)’s Third Annual Planetary and Terrestrial Mining Sciences Symposium (PTMSS), which started Sunday and wraps up today at Cambrian College.

The purpose of the conference is to promote a closer relationship between the space and mining sectors and to allow mining experts to network with space scientists and engineers, share knowledge and foster collaboration.

Palaia, 26, who will complete his master’s degree from the renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Friday, said many citizens and scientists question his company’s ambitions, but that doesn’t concern him or his partners.

“We’re pretty excited about what we’re trying to accomplish here...we definitely feel Mars can support life, industry and agriculture,” he told the conference.

By applying proper science and technology, raising enough funds and believing in a dream, 4Frontiers believes it can build a habitat where a dozen people can live on Mars within two decades, said Palaia.

An eight-month feasibility study convinced he and his partners their dream could become reality.

The challenges will be immense, but can be conquered with advanced technology and engineering, such as tackling issues such as radiation shielding, gravitational pull and transporting goods, services and humans safely, he said.

He must convince a lot of important people to invest in his company and that’s why research and development is so crucial, he said.

The use of mining technology and having humans and robots work closely together are all part of the master plan, he said.

The initial proposed “Hillside Settlement” on Mars would include the use of nuclear reactors, mining, manufacturing, and construction equipment, control systems, robots and automation systems and greenhouses to grow food, all which would allow human habitation in a safe environment, he said.

Mars already has sufficient water supplies, he said.

Tackling the issue of transporting all of the necessary equipment and science in an affordable manner will present one of the greatest challenges, he said.

“I would really like to see this happen in my lifetime,” he said. “We need to share the dream, sell the dream and engineer the dream.”

Some experts don’t believe humans living on Mars is realistic, but Palaia and his partners don’t agree.

“At first glance, when I meet people off the street, they say it’s insane, crazy and impossible, while others believe we’re wasting our time and others absolutely love what we’re trying to do,” he said. “We believe the science and technology is there to make our dream become reality.”

  • yes, i wonder, because mars is smaller than the earth, who would be allowed to live on mars. who would be the special few that get there, just the rich? & if maybe we turn out like that movie, Wall-E. or I Am Legend, without the creepy people. it's a bit scary to think of the future. & as for living on mars, why don't they just make really big buildings, suitable for people to live in, like in Wall-E again, or Star Trek? or maybe we could make it like that tv show, The Jetsons i think? it's a really old cartoon on cartoon network. haha, well, i hope they can "colonize" mars soon, because it would be very exciting, even if i probably won't be one of the people living there. also, mars, would it be separated like antarctica to choose which country will control which part of mars? i can't imagine different people from all over the world living together in one place, speaking the same language, with all their different cultures (& i don't mean like in the US, where you have different cultures, but like, yeah). (:

  • When a titanic enterprise like taking humans to mars is taken into action one has to think of it as a long term task that will need several generations to complete, and it can never be seen as a profit for a few, but to the whole mankind. There should be cooperation between countries. Of course that in case we go there we must be happy for the others achievement, once most of us won''t go, unless in a very distant future going to mars becomes a common thing. Taking into consideration the situation on earth maybe it should be a long term investment, beginning with a first phase with the lowest possible cost, pragmatic, efficient and beginning terraforming with the help of robots. Terraforming would eliminate in a long term one of the main obstacles: Radiation. To overcome bone loss maybe something simple like wearing heavy suits or doing exercises that don’t require gravity (springs, elastics or rubber).

  • I'd like to know who will be invited to go to mars ,if this is going to happen? suely not all of us , who will be left here to deal with this planet? thought of this?

  • cool i guess but i don't think it will happen because you have to be physically fit and it would cost way to much money

  • I think it might be possible to live on mars but it would take alot of science and technology and before we could colonize mars we need to have world peace because not just one country has enough money to do this task so ask your self...world peace? is it possible--no colonizing mars is it possible--no

  • I'd love to live (and die) on mars, i'd rather die at 65 and live the rest of my live on mars than live on earth and die at 75.

  • i think it would be awesome to live on a different planet such as mars

  • This is CRAZY! but it would be pretty fun to live on a different planet. :)

  • I'm doing an essay on this info. I reckon it would be heaps cool to live on Mars!!!!!!

  • Awesome! I'm doing a school project on Mars and I really like your information so I,m gonna us it. Thanks. Humans on Mars?! Who knew?

  • If you do the math on how the population has risen on earth over the past 10,000 years, the population of earth by 3000 will be up around 5,000,000,000,000,000,000 (5 quintillion) that's overpopulation times a billion! And the whole money thing. What exactly is money, except a ink splattered piece of paper which everyone fights over because of a little human emotion called greed! Making more would be no big deal if the amount of money wasn' t based on the amount of gold in Fort Knox. I guess what I'm trying to say is that making more money would be an easier way to get to Mars than trying to make more energy efficient ways to get there. Like the whole apocalypse/armageddon thing. If it happens, we're gonna need a place to go to to continue living. Although this is a little long winded, that's all I've got to say on the matter.

  • Actually, I totally agree with angela. I think , We already have bigger problems on this planet.

  • how do you know that?

  • How will we fix the earth? Money wont fix global warming if you haven't noticed.. and that is the biggest problem

  • yeah, i think spending money on going to Mars would be pointless considering how badly EARTH needs money.A good idea, but not practical under the current cicumstances.

  • instead of spending so much money on trying to live on mars, wouldn't it be wiser and more ethically correct, to use that money on fixing the problems on this planet first. I find the whole issue of living on mars and the moon highly hypocritical.

  • After having totally Trashed One Planet , what makes the human race worthy of the opportunity to consume another planet? And what planet can be parasitized after Mars? Disgusting.

  • I think the idea of colonizing Mars or any other planet would deem necessary toward the coming future. With the ongoing burning of fossil fuels and the atmosphere depletion, living on Mars will eventually save the future of our children. We as citizens of the U.S. should see that because the U.S. is a major contributor to burning fossil fuels and depletion of the atmosphere. I suggest that we need to seek an intellegent president that will support Space Exploration because, in turn, that will be vital to our future. Planet Earth will eventually not be able to support life and it is up to us to preserve not only the human race, but also animals and plant life. If and when you read this, consider this will overwhelming possibility because your decision effects your future and the future of your children (if you will have any). Congratulations Joseph Palaia. You have my utmost support! Keep up the DREAM! KEEP UP THE FUTURE!

  • They way I see it is knowledge and exploration and preservation of the human race to colonise other planets in the solar system

  • But... but.. but... WHAT ABOUT THE CORN???

  • yeah, now that they have destroyed one planet they can get a fresh start and destroy another!

  • To all you people who give space travel and living on mars a thumbs down. Remember people told Columbus he was crazy too. The massive migration to North America that followed lead to some of the greatest discoveries and advancements our society has known. So consider the fact that this may not be a bad thing, we all need something better to do than continuing to overpopulate our planet and fight over resources.

  • Hmm.. well.. I dunno. If you think about it, 14 years is a LONG time from now. A lot of things can happen in that time. Sure, we are thinking of the technological leaps from 1990 to 2000, which were relatively small, but energy and resources were dedicated to different things - two wars in iraq, computer technology, etc. If we were to dedicate a large amount of resources to terraforming mars to live - it could be possible. Think of it this way - it has to happen eventually, and someone's got to make the first jump. Sure, it's dangerous - but so is driving to Toronto on Highway 69. ... and yeah.. I'm not going to live on Mars unless we get a Tim Hortons. End of Story.

  • If we want to see Sudbury residents move to Mars, it requires at least 3 Tim Hortons, a few bingo halls, and of course lousy roads.

  • It could not be possible to move to Mars Its just cost to much money and their will be a major conflict!!!!

  • So you want to live and work on Mars? Living there would require humans to be in a closed and controlled environment as we surely can't live in the Martian atmosphere without space suits! What would happen to our bodies in the form of our bones becoming very brittle with the gravity on Mars being much less than it is on Earth. If humans ever go to Mars there is certainly a chance they can never return to Earth due to the problems encountered with the human skeleton while living and working on Mars..A round trip of today would require six months to get to Mars, then two years before Mars gets back into alignment with Earth for the return trip home and six more months for the trip back to Earth.. Many problems have to be solved involving billions of dollars before we ever attempt the very challenging flight to the red planet.. It surely will not be done in my life time...Dreaming big about going to Mars and living there sure does not translate to reality!

  • cool, It's possible and I'M DOING A PROJECT ON MARS! I think this is awesome

  • I love the Fact that you are trying to give a chance for humans to live there because what if somthing happens to earth that we need to retreat like the whole theory on the year 2012 which i pray is not true but we cannot change that but we can produce life elswhere.

  • I lived in Coniston for a while. That's as close to Mars anybody should be. Why would you want to spend billions to go there? You can purchase a broken down bungalow in Nickel Centre for $80k.
