The Social Planning Council of Sudbury is bringing in Ontario's Lieutenant Governor, James K. Bartleman, for a special keynote address Monday evening.

Lt. Gov. James K. Bartleman Bartleman was sworn in as the 27th Lieutenant Governor of Ontario on March 7, 2002 and became the first aboriginal Canadian to hold the prestigious position.

Once appointed to the position, Bartleman identified three key priorities for his mandate, including eliminating the stigma of mental illness, fighting racism and discrimination and encouraging aboriginal young people to succeed in life.

Born in Orillia, Bartleman grew up in the small town of Port Carling in the Muskoka area of Ontario and is a member of the Mnjikaninig First Nation.

"This is an exciting opportunity for our community...and the Social Planning Council is eager for many of our residents to come out and hear Mr. Bartleman speak," said Grace Kurke, president of the Social Planning Council of Sudbury, in a news release.

Before the dinner engagement, Bartleman will be visiting a local school involved in a social inclusion project and will be meeting with the planning council's Aboriginal Youth Leadership Team.

The dinner takes place Monday evening at the Caruso Club.

Tickets are limited. Tables of eight can be reserved. To purchase a ticket, which are $50 per person ($45 for Social Planning Council members), call Jody or Sara at 675-3894. Tickets are also available at Black Cat Too or online at www.spcsudbury.ca.

  • You call being appointed to a cerimonial position, galavanting around the province and spending millions of taxpayers dollars on tours being inspirational? Wow. That's quite the set of morals. The Lieutenant Governor's job is a throwback to the monarchmore» rule of Canada. It's a waste of our hard earned dollars. Especially when you consider that we are one of the top taxed countries in the world. And if you believe all the socialist groups, have a large homeless population and many people under the poverty line. I agree with Man about Town. That this guilded job should be scrapped. It's an embarassment to taxpayers and a dinosaur. The money can be better spent on the people that really need it. If you want, you can come over to my house for a meal and I'll give the same speech for the reasonable price of $5/plate.«less

  • Wow Man about Town, you sure must have a lot of free time because it seems that you respond to every story on this board, must be nice! You really need to stop being so negative - these people are a non-profit group who are bringing someone who ismore» speaking on some wonderful topics. And I don't know what rock you have been living under but I have attended many functions similar to this and $50 for a good meal and speaker is a very reasonable price. Wake up and get a real hobby please!«less

  • Unfortunately, you are bucking up the wrong tree, Mr.Man about Town - the LG is an example of success for aboriginal Canadians. A positive example such as this man are an inspiration, where as some people are just idiots and make everything out to memore» negative, such as yourself obviously.«less

  • Isn't it ironic that the Social Planning Counsel is welcoming a member of the buracracy that they attack on a constant basis? The Lieutenant Governor is an appointed position. Not elected. Spending millions every year on a ceremonial position. Much likemore» the Governor General of Canada. If the Social Planners are so concerned with the proper allocation of government funds to the under privilaged, they would be protesting this person instead of welcoming them with open arms. I guess when you need something you'll turn your back on your position to make a buck on a $50/plate meal.«less
