Greater Sudbury Mayor John Rodriguez says he will put forward a motion at city council Dec. 13 to reduce the number of people on the Greater Sudbury Utilities board from nine to four.

City councillors will have to vote in favour of the idea to reduce the size of the utilities board.

Rodriguez had promised to reduce the size of the board during the election campaign this fall.

“I have reviewed this proposal with the city solicitor who has confirmed that the requirements of both the corporations act and the Ontario Energy Board would be met with the new streamlined composition,” he said, in a release.

“As the mayor, I will sit on all boards and will decline any honorarium and meeting per diem payments.”

Rodriguez said the move would save city taxpayers $400,000 over the next four years.

“It is our duty as elected representatives to be prudent stewards of the public purse as we continue in the delivery of municipal services. I look forward to reviewing this proposal with my council on Wednesday.”
