After years of placing at the bottom, and more recently refusing to co-operate with the magazine, Laurentian University finally made it to the Top 10 of the Maclean’s university ranking issue.

Last year, the university came 16th on the list, compared to 10th for 2007.

“We’re delighted that Laurentian University is being recognized nationally among the Top 10 schools for undergraduate work,” said Laurentian University president Judith Woodsworth.

“With $38.6 million in research funding, we were recently ranked No. 1 for growth in research funding. Our school of education and other new facilities are under construction, enrolment is high, and we’re adding new staff and researchers. Laurentian’s an exciting place to be in 2007.”

Laurentian ranked highly in the “total research dollars per faculty member” category in Maclean’s, placing second out of 21 primarily undergraduate universities. LU also maintained its fourth place ranking for scholarships and bursaries and library acquisitions.

Laurentian University participates in Common University Data Ontario (CUDO), a wide spectrum of comprehensive, robust and accurate information prepared by each Ontario University that provides key measures for the public and especially for students and parents trying to make decisions. CUDO includes information such as:
- degrees awarded, student enrolment and entering averages - all by program;
- student satisfaction;
- first-year tuition and ancillary fees by program;
- number of teaching faculty;
- undergraduate class size, by year level;
- research awards granted; and
- graduation rates and employment rates by program.

  • You are responsible for your own decisions. If a person wants to major in a study that doesn't have employment when you graduate. Thats the student's problem. Too bad you took political science or astronomy, history, music, or majored in modern dance ..........IN A MINING TOWN. An obscure diploma doesn't automatically guarantee a job. Just like the rest of the REAL WORLD, people don't always get their dream job. Its called reality and responsibility. Sometimes you have to dig ditches to put food on the table. No degree in sociology or art will change that.

  • L.U. is a great school and is getting better. Enough said.

  • A recent study showed that you don't get a better education at a big name school. LU has smaller classes so students get more one on one time with the Prof is need be. I talk to many students from other cities who chose LU for this reason. LU has too many Profs without a Ph.D though, yet their still paid like one.

  • My understanding is that Maclean's responded to the criticisms raised by Laurentian and many other universities (including Toronto etc) and used only publicly available data. Laurentian is improving, and this is in part because of the emphasis on research and scholarship. There is more work to be done, but the signs are positive.

  • what is the big fuss.. we all know after all that Laurentian is a regional university, far below Ottawa University and the University of Toronto. It is acceptable for first generation university students and for those who cannot afford to leave Sudbury. Please do not think Laurentian U is on the same level as Harvard or Yale... or McGill, Laval, UBC, Montreal, Waterloo, McMaster....

  • funny that they don't mention in the article that there are many canadian unversities that have pulled out of this ranking in the past couple of years including: University of Alberta, McMaster, University of Ottawa, etc. Therefore, since these other universities are off of the list, the other one's are now moving up to the top.

  • No need for negativity about this. The fact is that LU is improving! It is obvious from recent media events that they have toughened up with some of the faculty who have been around forever and think they can get away with whatever they want...that doesn't work at other schools and now LU is sweeping out the cobwebs and making things a lot better! Woo hoo! Way to go LU!

  • There's a lot of LU poli sci/geography/astronomy grads out there who I suspect are flipping burgers or wearing a security guard uniform. I wonder how they'd rate the place.

  • Sorry Stevie. Everyone is right. This is the biggest flip flop on Laurentian'a part. Hats off to them for improving but you be consistent. Don't knock the survey one year and praise it the next.

  • Only in Sudbury do people take a positive and turn it negative. Shame on you all!

  • Great pride? In flip-flopping about their stand on McLeans' hierarchy of universities? Yeah, sure. If they now don't become the poster child of hypocrites!

  • I've never been extremely impressed by LU. They always seem to come up short when it matters.I'm glad it seems their standards are improving. However, I think its funny that there's an article on this site that paints them in an extremely bad light and one that paints them in a good light. Reading this article I'd be like "ok this makes sense I'll go there". Reading how they're foricing students to pay for the schools legal fees... I'd never go to that school. Any institution that held a students financial well being in such little disregard as too jepordize their academic futures simply disgusts me. Paying those fees could cripple those students and prevent them from achieving their goals. Simply put those legal fees are nothing in comparision to LU's operating budget. But that money is everything to those three students. It just seems very vengeful too seek payment from the students when they were simply standing up for what they thought was an injustice. An open minded institution would realize that. That's why I think LU still has a far way to go. The school may be expanding and growing but they aren't a top class institution if they don't have any respect and regard for the students beyond their money.

  • Finally, the credit it deserves. Laurentian has some of the finest minds in the world instructing students and we as Sudburians should take great pride in that.

  • EXACTLY! Henry. Laurentian refused to take part in questionnaires sent out. They discredited MacLeans over the years and were on the record as saying the poll is unfair, unscientific, biased, and inaccurate. I wonder if they still stand by their own words? We'll see if integrity is taught by actions.

  • funny how Laurentian blasted this evaluation exercise in the past... but now glorifies it. It wasn't relevant before: but now it is.
