Ward 6 Councillor Andre Rivest is all for development in the city but, he thinks now is the time to plan for upgrading future infrastructure. Otherwise we may have prematurely reached our limits to growth.

“Development is good. We need the jobs from private sector initiatives and we need the houses that companies like Dalron are developing in their new Valley View Rd. subdivision. Our mining sector is booming and we have to house their workers,” said Rivest.

“But there are limits fast approaching, if they are not here already. (For example)there are limits to what roads like Municipal Rd. 80 can handle.”

Rivest said he heard city staff say that 1,300 lots have been approved for development to the north of the city’s central core.

“These roads to Val Caron, and even to Hanmer, are congested now. After these latest approvals, what happens next year for the next round of subdivisions?”

Rivest thinks he has the answer.

“The solution is the Barry Downe extension. Build a road north, 10 km from Cambrian College to Notre Dame Ave. in Hanmer. The surrounding land is vacant, owned by the mining companies and there are a few lakes present as well that could be attractive for development.”

Rivest said pushing a road north would immediately relieve congestion on Municipal Rd. 80 and create synergies between businesses and consumers in New Sudbury, Hanmer and even Capreol.

“Shoppers will have access to businesses and services north and south and since there is lots of land available in the northern part of the city, that might facilitate more housing being built there. There is a lot of infrastructure available already which can facilitate growth there.”

The road won’t come cheap though.

“Rule of thumb for roads is $3 million per km plus land acquisition,” said Rivest.
How could a new road be implemented?

Rivest said he was able to get the Barry Downe extension placed as a long term project in the review of the city’s official plan two years ago. He was able to get 3,100 people in only five weeks to sign a petition for the extension as part of his presentation to the planning committee at that time.

Rivest said the next step is for council to approve a route-planning study, which will cost approximately $250,000 to determine exact location and property requirements.

“We also need an environmental assessment done to be able to access infrastructure funds from senior levels of government. If we do both, then this project could be one of this city’s projects proposed to the province and/or the feds.”

“Call 311 and email your mayor and councillors and say we all need the Barry Downe extension. They need to have the same passion for this that I have.”

  • It's an idea who time has come. A lot of money is being spent on developing the 69N corridor. We could have 12 lanes and still not solve the problem of the Lasalle/Notre Dame bottleneck. The Barrydowne extension would alleviate much of that problem, It would also relieve the wear and tear on that stretch of road by dispersing the traffic over 3 roads instead of 2..... and yes probaby save lives and prevent injuries. Keep up the good work Mr. Rivest

  • I am in favor of the Maley Drive extension 100%! It's not going to better if it stays like this..we need space on our roads..less stress...less time travelling ...

  • here! here! man about town! - well said. a new road to the valley is not needed. the traffic flow is fine on sixty nine. there hasnt been a fatal collision there in years. if you want to live in the valley and save a few thousand on your home, then get used to the commute. take a look at other larger cities like in southern ontario. they have 45 minutes to an hour drives to work for the same distance. it just doesnt make sense to build another parallel road so a few peoples can drive faster and save 10 minutes. we need to take the congestion off lasalle or find another route around the city. not throw cash away at a few complainers from one area. priorities guys!

  • Hey My Grenon? You know what else saves lives? Driving courteously and safely! And you know what would be beneficial for Sudbury? Wanna hear it? Well here it is! A real freeway that would connect Wahnapitae, and truly bypass Sudbury completely so the other drivers wouldn't be subject to our world-renowned Sudbury driving habits... (sarcastically-speaking...) If it would be up to me, I would build a downtown freeway that would go from McCrea heights down to the Four Corners.. but of course that would be too contraversial.... and unfeasible!

  • This extension is the most obvious thing the city should do. It would connect all kinds of dots. Capreol, Hamner, Val Caron, Garson and New Sudbury. But this isn't Rivest new idea, M. Grenon.

  • Anything that will stop the bottle neck at Notre Dame & Lasalle is needed now. bypassing this intersection is something that should have already been started. Yes sure all the roads leading to it are new and good. but the flow of traffic really needs to improve at the bottle neck.

  • I am 100% behind Mr. Rivest new extention. I truly hope to see this new road built right away. I know we are going to get negative remarks on this, but it must be built. BUILD IT AND IT WILL SAVE LIVES>>>

  • I believe in development for the city, upgrading infrastructure, better roads also but as a frustrated taxpayer I think it's time for the bus driver to put on his brakes and get off the bus. How many snowstorms do we have to go through before they get it right. Which comes first, the sander or the plow. On January 29 at about 10 a.m. (the temperature outside is 4 degrees celcius) , the plow went down Carr's Landing Rd spreading sand with the plow blade up. Not even 5 hours later, the plow went down the same road that he had just sanded but this time he had his blade down, plowing the sand off the road that he had just spread. Do you think there is something wrong with this picture? It's no wonder the taxpayer is frustrated with the high taxes when you see things like this happening, but yet still our taxes go higher for more mismanagement.

  • Glad to see my vote wasn't wasted. I totally agree with Mr Rivest. If they dont figure out ways to direct this overflow of traffic Montee Rouleau and Montee Principale will be overwhelmed with speeders trying to make up time by avoiding the main roads.

  • GO andre GO!!! You are on the right track!

  • Highway 69 North (formerly RR #80) is just fine. Rivest is playing political games again. Grandstanding for his personal area. 69N was repaved less than 10 years ago. It is fully 4 lanes all the way into the Valley and into Hanmer. The McRea Heights area's reduced speed limit and strict police enforcement has been incredibly successful in eliminating collisions. The Radar Road route still serves as a great alternative to getting to New Sudbury and is under used. When speaking of congestion, and efficient spending of road dollars, there are other routes that are higher priorities. Such as the Maley Drive extension. Want to save cash? They should have scaled down the over built Hwy 17 4 lane that is east of Falconbridge Road. (Who needs 2 sidewalks, lavish trees+shrubs, and a centre median that will be torn to shreds by plows?) Keep your soapbox chatter Mr.Rivest.

  • Just do it.
