Internet service to be improved on Manitoulin

Expanded broadband Internet coverage is making its way to Manitoulin Island thanks to $485,000 from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund.

The funds will go to the Blue Sky Economic Growth Corporation (NOHFC) to bring high-speed Internet to more than 80 per cent of Manitoulin Island. The money will help develop the infrastructure to deliver broadband to nearly 30 communities across the island.

“We want our island entrepreneurs and public agencies to have a level playing field when it comes to competing and transacting in today's fast-paced world,” said Algoma-Manitoulin MPP Mike Brown, in a news release.

Quick facts

- The Ontario 2008 budget committed to increasing annual funding to the NOHFC by $10 million a year from $60 million in 2007-08 to $100 million by 2011-12.

- Since the launch of the revised Emerging Technology Program in January of 2007, the NOHFC has approved $29.3 million in support of 17 projects to enhance telecommunications infrastructure across the north. This is in addition to the government's investment of $15.9 million from October 2003 to December 2006, under the NOFHC's previous technology program.

  • The start of next June is when it ''should'' be happening. It was just over 2 years ago the near miss happened. it will be 3 years next june - the end of their contract. Good plan staying away until the market cools down.

  • No G, haven''t moved and now kind of don''t expect to for a while. Sudbury''s real estate prices are just way too inflated right now and there are all kinds of the same signs all over Canada that we had in the US before our inflated market burst. I''m now kind of waiting for that to happen. I''d prefer not to overpay by $100K or more. I''ve been contacted by a couple people, but I''m still learning about the area. When''s the Inco strike supposed to happen? Didn''t you guys just have a near miss on that?

  • Farrelli - You haven''t moved here yet? Did you ever get in contact with whoever said they would help you with the ins and outs of the city? I''d say wait until the INCO strike and make your move when people start to get desperate.

  • What I can''t believe is the price you guys pay for "high speed" connections. I''m planning to move to Sudbury from Boston, and here I pay $27 a month for 7 mbps, and from what I see on the Personna site, you apparently pay $47 a month for 6 mbps. I guess it''s better than their Atlantic rate of $60. What a ripoff!

  • What is still astonishing is that some parts of Greater Sudbury still don''t have broadband internet through the phone companies. For example; I have friends in Garson and they just got high-speed internet last year. All because Ma Bell didn''t have their 10 year old neighbourhood connected to the system. Meanwhile, homes on the highway, 20+metres away have had the service for over a decade? Let''s get our own city''s house in order and demand our economic centre have proper service to all the citizens.
