Both Sudbury and Nickel Belt ridings could change hands on Oct. 14.

Two polls, Ekos and Nanos, featured on the Hill and Knowlton election predictor website, predict a Liberal Party collapse across Canada, including Northern Ontario.

Both polls indicate many Liberals swept out of BC, Northern Ontario, Quebec and much of the Maritimes. A Conservative majority is predicted.

Both NDP candidates Claude Gravelle (Nickel Belt) and Glenn Thibeault (Sudbury) say the writing is on the wall for the Liberals.

Gravelle said his prospects are much better this time because Ray Bonin, former incumbent MP has retired. That is leaving the riding “in play.” Gravelle trailed Bonin by only 2,000 votes in the last two federal elections.

Gravelle said at-the-door the issues are the same: high gas prices, terrible roads and concerns about waiting times for health care.

“Our leader Jack Layton will provide real gas price relief for consumers, while Conservatives break promises and protect big oil companies,” he said.

Gravelle campaigned recently in Sturgeon Falls, east of the city.

“A lot of people have bought houses there (in Sturgeon Falls) in order to commute into all the jobs now in Sudbury. But they are really affected by high gas prices,” said Gravelle.

“Big oil shouldn’t have a free licence to gouge consumers. Jack Layton will start with a price monitoring agency, with regulations based on consultations with the provinces and stakeholders,” said Gravelle’s release.

Thibeault said high gas prices are a common complaint he has heard at the door.

“Most people do not like Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion. They also do not like carbon taxes.” Though Thibeault announced his candidacy at the drop of the election writ, he said his campaign is making up for lost time.

“My team and I knock on 200 doors a night. Everywhere we are getting strong support in the riding.”

NDP strategist Robin Nieto said his national party has thrown a lot of money into Sudbury riding, as well as Nickel Belt. “We intend on winning Nickel Belt. We came close the last two federal elections with Claude Gravelle. We are out to win the Sudbury riding too. Both campaigns operate as a team,” said Nieto.
Liberals are having a hard sell with the carbon tax program, he added.

“Not only are northerners complaining about high gas prices, but winter is coming. That means the 20 per cent increase in natural gas prices announced in July will hit them in their home heating bills. The Liberals and their carbon tax is turning off voters and they are coming to us,” said Nieto.

Gravelle served as a town councillor for Rayside-Balfour from 1997 to 2000 and worked at Inco as a machinist from 1968 to 2003. He has served his community as director of the Community Health Care Centre, was past director of Rayside-Balfour Minor Hockey and chaired the Citizens’ Police Advisory Committee.

Thibeault is executive director of the United Way. For more information, contact Claude Gravelle at 897-3769 or email claudegravelle@ndp.ca. Glenn Thibeault’s office is at 768 Barrydowne Rd. (at Gemmel Street), visit www.glennthibeault.ca or phone 669-1110.

Some NDP proposals

- invest the equivalent of one per cent of the GST (one of the five) to increase funding of the important priorities of communities

-  stop gas price gouging by creating an Ombudsman who would investigate and prosecute oil company collusion

-  listen to northern mayors and establish an infrastructure renewal program for northern cities, reverse federal downloading for health and social service costs, and spend more money on northern roads

-  train 28,000 nurses, doctors and other health professionals to cut wait times across Canada because close to 90 per cent of northern Ontario doctors are not accepting new patients

-  expand the use of nurse practitioners and multi-disciplinary clinics to bring primary and timely health care to more communities

-  cut the cost of prescription drugs for families

  • Come on Scott, you''ve been around long enough to remember that it was the NDP under our "Greatest Canadian", Tommy Douglas that introduced and brought in our health care system. By the way health care is still a "social service", that all Canadiansmore» appreciate having today. It is the same health care system that the Cons. and Libs. are slowly dismantling through privitization, causing all of us to pay for some health care services and medications. Soon there will be no help for our long term care patients. Yet, they continue to give multi-million dollar tax breaks etc. to huge corporations and CAO''s that eventually move their facilities and jobs to China and other countries and pay them slave wages. Then we import those products back to Canada, complete with lead, and other very hazardous toxins! Duhhh!! We are following down the same path that Bush has prepared for us. If you don''t think our economy is going for a crap soon, go ahead and sell all of your tissue paper. Harper knows where we are heading, and this is why he called this election, breaking his own law and his promise to Canadians. As well, I must remind you that Jack Layton was the President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, elected by all politicians throughout Canada to speak for their municipalities. He has the experience and leadership qualities to make us proud of him as our Prime Minister. He has demonstrated that he will and can work for all Canadians! Please don''t suggest that we should " vote for the party" that is going to win! We had 12 years of Diane in the governing party and it did not help us at all!! If Gerry Labelle had a chance, I would not be making the following suggestion. And if it is true, as I have been hearing, that everyone wants to get rid of Diane, well there is only one choice. The NDP have come second in the past two federal elections and are gaining support. A vote for Glenn Thibeault is your only hope of meeting your goal. A vote to any other candidate will only cement Diane''s win once again. Cheers Gerry«less

  • I do like Jack Layton...seems like a hard working honest guy. But there is no experience to lead. This is what happened during the NDP time in Ontario. tough economic times and they made really bad choices. I don''t see how a NDP government couldmore» possibly help this country. Do I think that Liberals or conservatives are any better? .. no .... but one of them are going to win. And what happens to Sudbury now ...we vote the wrong way and get nothing .... times are good here .... lets vote for the party that is going to win ..... that is how things get done ... not by being one of 30 sets held by NDP. Cheers Scott«less

  • The NDP if ever elected will bankrupt the country. They have no Ideal where the money for all their social programs comes from, you and I , the taxpayer. As for Gerry''s comments just what are all these so called right wing corportations you babble onmore» about? If you think about it, the Canadian and the USA economys are simular but separate. You don''t have the bank crashes or a 700 billion dollar bail out in Canada. Our banks our secure and because the USA is going down hill and they are Canada''s largest trading partner of course it is reasonable we will lose some money also since they aren''t buying our goods. How is that Harpers fault? We are a country 1/10th the population of the USA and linked on the same continent so of course we sell our resorces to them... Vote for Harper and the economy will survive but if you waste your vote on Layton brace yourself of a horrible crash and gigantic tax increases...«less

  • If the NDP ever goes into power (which is probably over my dead body), I hope they won''t flop like Bob Rae.

  • The Federal NDP have never formed government, so to suggest that they will destroy our economy is a completely mindless comment. They have proven to be very responsible money managers. The NDP have given us our health care system that everyone enjoys.more» The Liberals and Conservatives are joined at the hip in their attempts to destroy it! In just over 31 months, the Conservatives have, with the help of the Liberals, taken us from a very healthy financial situation to one that is teetering on financial disaster. They are also the governments that continue to take from the working class to give to the right wing corporations as we see happining in the states. No accountability for how they use our money.«less

  • ugh.. the NPD is going to bankrupt us all... the only clear choice I see is going straight ahead with Harper as he is actually making things happen. no over blown grandios plans like the Liberals or NDP... blowing billions.... they just don''t have themore» prpoer business module to keep Canada an economic driving force. Marleau is a joke! it is nice to see that folks around here are now demanding representation.. no matter who you vote for.NDP or Conservative. the liberals have lost their way and horribly represent themselves. «less

  • I will never vote for the ndp or the conservatives. If the ndp gets elected ,Canada will go deep in the hole because the ndp will give a lot of money to help the lazy welfare bums. They will spend so much money that our taxes will certainly have tomore» increase.Harper is not a very good Prime Minister. If the ndp or conservative candidates come and knock on my door, they will find out where to go.«less

  • It will be great to have an energetic, dedicated and smart MP in Sudbury when Glenn Thibeault wins this election. He really showed that he "gets it" on all the important issues at the Chamber of Commerce debate.

  • Okay while "Big Oil" does make profit off gas prices, the "Government" is also taxing it to death. Is the NDP planning on reducing the tax on gas or just going to limit "Big Oil" share of the profit? I wonder who is the bigger theif?

  • Claude Gravelle will be the most hardworking and honest M.P, that Nickel Belt is very fortunate to have!Good luck Claude,Bon Chance!!
