A Sudbury man who worked in Vale Inco's corporate relations department until recently has announced he is seeking the federal Liberal nomination in the Sudbury riding.

Gary Holman also has many years of experience as a federal bureaucrat.

In the past, Holman served in Ottawa as the senior policy advisor to the Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and the Minister of Agriculture and Agri- Food.

He also served as departmental liaison to the Minister responsible for FedNor and the Canada Ontario Infrastructure Programme.

A nomination meeting will be held at a date in the near future.

The Liberals held the Sudbury riding federally for many years, but former MP Diane Marleau lost the fall 2008 election to now-New Democrat MP Glenn Thibeault.

"I am seeking the nomination because I feel I have the qualifications, experience and commitment to be part of the Liberal team lead by Michael Ignatieff, a leader that people are turning to because they feel that Mr. Ignatieff and the Liberals will deliver on the promise of a better future for all of Canada. I have the drive to ensure that the people of Sudbury benefit from that promise," Holman said, in a release.

A release put out by Holman said he "played a lead role in dealing with issues such as BSE (mad cow disease), the Agricultural World Trade Agreement and diamond mine development in the NWT. He also played a lead role in Prime Minister Paul Martin's Aboriginal Round Table that resulted in the Kelowna Accord."

"In the next election Liberals will look to a candidate who will bring vision, experience and results to the people of Sudbury. I believe I am that candidate. The reality is that Sudbury needs a voice at the Government table and with Michael Ignatieff leading our team, the people of Sudbury have that opportunity," said Holman.

Holman has also volunteered with the Sudbury Federal Liberal Association for many years, including during elections.

In order to vote at the nomination meeting people have to join the Liberal Party of Canada at a cost of $10.

Further details about the nomination will be released as they become available.
