This year, LEAF Sudbury will present the award-winning feature-length documentary film, "I am a Girl" to celebrate Person’s Day 2014 on Oct. 9.

For this year only, we shall be in the Sheridan Auditorium at Sudbury Secondary School. Next year, we shall be at the new downtown indie cinema.

For 20 years, the Sudbury branch of LEAF — the Women’s Legal Education and Action Fund — has celebrated Person’s Day in Sudbury.

Person’s Day is the anniversary of that October day in 1929 when the Privy Council of Great Britain declared that Canadian women must be deemed “persons” and therefore allowed to vote. LEAF celebrates the day in every major city in Canada.

Our event offers financial and moral support for LEAF’s work to ensure Canadian Charter Rights for women and minorities by participating in key cases where Human Rights have been under threat in Canada. As well, we give books for local students and the public on Charter rights issues.

"I am a Girl," directed by Rebecca Barry, is an inspirational film that shows what it means to be a girl in the 21st century. Despite the promises of feminism, girls still face discrimination in many cultures.

This documentary tells the stories of girls in several countries. Theirs are tales of hope, courage and refusal to accept second best. A reception follows the film.

We are hoping that many businesses and professionals, especially those seeking leadership roles in our city, will support the event, and LEAF, by adding their names to the list of sponsors.

Tickets ($25 each) are available at the Apollo Restaurant on The Kingsway, Gloria’s Restaurant, Laurentian University and at the door. Ticket price includes the gala reception after the film.

Charter memberships for the Downtown Indie Cinema will also be available at this event.

To become a sponsor at $150, phone 705-586-6915.

Chris Nash is a retired psychologist and LEAF supporter.
