A Year in Review

It’s been just over a year that I, along with council, was elected, and I couldn’t be prouder. I have a great team, and we have accomplished and seen so much in a short period of time. Council demonstrated very early on that we are open to change.

Bigger will be followed by mayoral candidate Jeff Huska on Oct 16.

It’s been just over a year that I, along with council, was elected, and I couldn’t be prouder. I have a great team, and we have accomplished and seen so much in a short period of time.

Council demonstrated very early on that we are open to change. We repealed the bylaw restricting store hours to ensure that businesses had the choice to make their own decisions on when they’d like to stay open.

The City of Greater Sudbury Charter was signed by council as a whole. We have developed an excellent relationship, and we’re all working together for the best interests of the citizens of Greater Sudbury.

We have a more open and transparent government, through initiatives like open data, live streaming council and committee meetings, and communicating what we’re up to at the city. We will continue to do more on this front, and I know staff is working hard on this!

We’re in the process of finalizing our Strategic Plan, which will set the direction of council to staff. Through this process, council has identified its strategic pillars which include: growth and economic development, responsive, fiscally prudent open governance, quality of life and place, and sustainable infrastructure.

On Nov. 27 we will be holding a special meeting for large projects and community initiatives. We’re looking to ensure the public is up to speed on many of the great things people are working on in the city through a public information session. We look forward to updates on the status of these projects and initiatives prior to the start of our 2016 budget deliberations.

Our community has also participated in Rogers Home Town Hockey, has been designated the happiest community in Canada and the Amazing Race showcased Greater Sudbury on the national stage.

We saw a new one this year – Upfest, which I had the pleasure of DJing at and this past week we were host to the International Mining Safety Conference, held for the first time in Canada.

I have met so many passionate, engaged and enthusiastic citizens during my time as mayor. I’m so proud to represent this community, and I’m very much looking forward to year two.

All the Best,

Brian Bigger
Mayor, City of Greater Sudbury
