The Rotary Club of Sudbury Sunrisers has been very busy over the summer. After our very successful Paul Harris event for Junior and Leslie Moutsatsos on June 25 it has been full steam ahead.

On Aug. 20, our club, under the direction of Gerry Lougheed Jr, club membership chair, and his committee, hosted a bring a friend to Rotary breakfast.

The event was extremely successful with each Rotarian bringing a friend with them to the morning breakfast meeting. More than 100 people participated. The event was designed to expose Rotary membership to as many people as we could reach.

In addition, our guest speaker that morning was Glenn Thibeault, MPP for Sudbury. He made an announcement of major government funding that is intended to support at-risk youth in the city.

Thibeault announced Ontario is expanding the Youth Opportunities Fund to prioritize northern and rural communities, and in so doing is increasing funding to more than $12.95 million annually by 2017–2018.

The fund supports community projects for at-risk youth through the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Funding is open to community-based organizations, including grassroots groups and youth-led initiatives.

This announcement was welcome news indeed for the Greater Sudbury Police Service. Superintendent Sheila Weber was on hand at the breakfast and spoke of the ongoing need for this type of funding, and how the money enhances the police ability to better deal with at-risk youth.

The Sunrisers are busy putting the final touches on the upcoming district conference, which takes place the weekend of Sept. 11 at the Radisson Hotel downtown.

Conference chair Liz Spooner Young and co-chair Joanna Cox have been working diligently with their committee members to present one of the best conferences ever. We have already exceeded 225 delegates and are expecting more.

During the event, Rotarians from throughout our district will have the opportunity to experience the ambience and fellowship of local Rotarians as well as the hospitality of the people of Sudbury.

Our major fundraiser for the year, Vive Le Vin!, is set to go Nov. 21 at the Caruso Club. This year’s event is being chaired by Sunriser Louise Bergeron. This is an exciting event and promises to be bigger and better than last year’s very successful event.

Tickets are available now from any member of the Sunrisers or through our website.
Based on our success from last year, it is anticipated tickets will go quickly so reserve your table now.

Tickets are $125 a person, which includes, wine, cheese samples, an exciting evening buffet, dancing and an opportunity to participate in an excellent silent auction and reverse draw. We hope to see you there.
