It’s a busy summer for the Rotary Sunrisers

The Rotary club of Sudbury Sunrisers has been very busy during the month as many of our projects in the community have come to fruition.

The fourth annual Fishing For Food event that took place at Ramakko”s Source for Adventure June 18-20 was a huge success. The event raises donations of food for the Elgin Street Mission. \

Under the leadership of Rotarian Mick Weaver this year’s event collected more than four tons of food. Two tons consisted of 2,100 cans of coffee for the coffee campaign spearheaded by Gerry Lougheed Jr. and his team.

The Rotary Club partnered for this event with Legend Boats, Ramakko’s Source for Adventure, KICX 91.7 FM, Battestelli’s Your Independent Grocer, and Vrab’s You Independent Grocer.

Everyone worked together to make this year’s event one of the most profitable yet in terms of collecting food for the Mission. Congratulations to all who took part.

On June 22, Rotarian Lise Dutrisac of the Rotary Club of Sudbury took part in the changeover ceremony that sees her become our new district governor.

There is no one more deserving than Lise. She has worked tirelessly for Rotary in her own club since first being recruited for membership. Lise takes over from Brian Menton, who just completed his second term as district governor. We thank Brian for his dedication and for truly espousing the philosophy of “Service Above Self.”

Lise will be at the helm at the Rotary Club district conference being hosted in Sudbury on Sept. 10-13. The conference is an exciting time for all Rotarians, but especially those in Sudbury who will have an opportunity to showcase our beautiful city to more than 250 delegates.

The Paul Harris Fellowship induction for Junior and Leslie Moutsatsos was held at the Caruso Club on June 25. The event was an overwhelming success. Junior and Leslie led the festivities.

Monies raised from this event were earmarked for the Janice Foligno Foundation, which is dedicated to the fight against breast cancer and provides money for cancer research.

As well, funds were directed to the neo-natal unit at Health Sciences North. Mary Lou Hussak, executive director of the Health Sciences North Foundation, was on hand for the event and expressed gratitude for this donation.

We thank Rotarian Kate Furlotte for all of her work and her tireless dedication to ensuring that this wonderful evening came off without a hitch. Congratulations Kate.

We will soon say goodbye to our exchange students, Mirelle Neves from Brazil and Lorenza Mottinelli from Italy. Both of these young women attended high school in Sudbury: Mirelli at Loellen Park Secondary and Lorenza at St. Charles College.

Lorenza was recognized at the St. Charles sports banquet as the MVP in flag football. In addition, she received the Zanna Yawney Memorial Award for high academics and sportsmanship for participating in multiple sports. Lorenza was also nominated for athlete of the year.

In her home country, there is little opportunity for participation in organized sports for girls. She took every opportunity to become involved in sports while in Canada and distinguished herself in these events. Congratulations Lorenza.

There is a busy summer in front of the Rotary Club of Sudbury of Sunrisers with the planning for the fall conference shifting to high gear. Stay tuned for more information about this exciting conference and how you can be involved.
