Pioneer Manor wing ‘should have been ready two years ago’ - Fred Lammi

Re: Article “$14.6 M Pioneer Manor wing caters to residents with dementia,” which appeared in the June 15 edition of Northern Life.

Note the mayor and two councillors gloating in the photo (accompanying the story about the new Pioneer Manor wing). (The photo is) appropriate for an election year to poison the minds of the naive.

This has turned out to be a sick re-election joke, using our most vulnerable, the elderly, as stepping stones.

After the fire that destroyed part of Pioneer Manor, for two years, concerns about our elders jammed four to a room, with hardly enough room to get out of bed, fell on deaf ears.

The argument was they couldn’t get an agreement with the insurance company. After two years with “no agreement with the insurance company,” work was started.

There was all kinds of money all of a sudden, and to top it off, they built a state of the art Taj Mahal, (as) I remember (Ward 8 Coun. Ted) Callaghan saying.

The building should have been ready two years ago. There are more than 600 people waiting (to be placed at Pioneer Manor).

Taxpayers would not have been upset if the money was borrowed, and reconstruction had been started immediately.
Note that the mayor and council used financing for an arena, but couldn’t find the money to rebuild Pioneer Manor in a timely manner.

I hope the people remember this gang on election day.

  • Like everything else with these elected officials,im sure there is more to it than we know. It would be interesting to know if pioneer manor or the Hospital collected the "lodging" fees while the patients where housed at the hospital waiting to get back into pioneer manor. I know for certain that new patients where admitted to pioneer manor while the hospital beds where occupied with pioneer manor patients.

    There was a crooked man,
And he had a crooked smile,
    He ran a crooked City,
    To make a crooked pile,
    He bribed a crooked crony
    To form a crooked Board,
    And all its regulations
    Were crookedly ignored,
    He paid a crooked banker,
    To rig a crooked sale,
    And they all lived together
    In a crooked little gaol.
