Firefighters fed by Subway restaurant owners - David Wickenden

In the early morning of Aug. 28, Greater Sudbury Fire Fighters attended a structure fire in the Wahnapitae area.
The crews fought the blaze all night and into the day with very little relief on this stubborn fire. Fire fighting is an extremely demanding activity that requires much energy.

Temperatures rose to 29 C that day, which made the task even more difficult.

Crews who had been on the scene for an extended period where give breaks to rehabilitate. Some attended the Subway in Wahnapitae to get a meal. Others had sandwiches delivered to the fire scene. Cold drinks were also consumed in order to rehydrate.

After the emergency, I attended the Wahnapitae Subway location to reimburse them for the food and beverages, only to be told that the bill had been taken care of by the owners, Shawn and Stacey Vallillee.

I also learned that this was not the first time that the owners have generously demonstrated their support for the firefighters. One of the store’s employees told me that since the firefighters often help others in their community, they wanted to express their support and thanks in return.

On behalf of the Greater Sudbury Fire Service, I want to thank the owners and employees of the Wahnapitae Subway for their kind support and consideration.

  • Motorboat, firefighters are expected to fight fires 100% of the time too, but if there is no fire then they can't. Same goes for police, who are not out fighting crime 100% of the time, and paramedics who are not out saving lives 100% of the time. All these jobs have a certain amount of down time, but they are on call for their whole shift.

Police are expected to fight crime 100% of the time, paramedics are always saving lives, im expected to perform my duties all the time, so why the hell not?

  • So motorboat you would prefer them to be fighting fires 100% of the time? Think before you type.

  • So to say they spend 90% of their time doing nothing is not fair.

  • When firefighters aren't putting out fires they are attending to medical calls, car accidents and alarms to name a few. So to day they spend 90% of their time doing nothing is not fair.

  • Hey I have a job providing services to the public that is dangerous also, work long hours rain or shine you name it. Wheres my free subway?

I know these men have a far more riskier job than I but they dont really do anything while not fighting fires which is 90% of the time.
