City penny wise and pound foolish - Richard Pulsifer

It is quite interesting to see another majestic pronouncement by Ward 11 Coun. Terry Kett – this time on the earth-shaking issue of excessive idling.

This feel-good, apple-pie-in-the-sky declaration comes hard on the heels of Kett’s announcement last week that the city had “sent to collection” the sum of $13,000 apparently outstanding from the francophone games in the summer of 2011.

By all accounts, participants in these games, coming from every Canadian province and territory, contributed $6 million or more to the economy of the City of Greater Sudbury, in addition to garnering priceless publicity for our region.

Meanwhile, the city is still waiting for reimbursement of close to $300,000 from the bus ticket fiasco with no attendant benefit to the city. Talk about being penny wise and pound foolish.

Can the beleaguered taxpayers of Sudbury expect Kett to send this matter to collection without any more delay? Or does he simply expect us to forget it and write off one more loss to the city’s coffers?

Here’s a suggestion for Kett and the rest of municipal council. If the $13,000 is of such importance to the city’s well-being, let each councillor contribute $1,000 from his or her reelection slush fund.
I am sure that mayor Matichuk could also find $1,000 floating around in the mayor’s office. Voilà — problem solved. Don’t hold your breath.

  • Once again the Greater City of Vale comes up with an idiotic idea. How in God's name can you impose this law while the Deathstack is allowed to pump out 12 times the allowable emissions set by MOE regulations for the next ten years. I know I can't be the only who sees how ridiculous this is. Is it too late to change my vote for Ward Councillor ???????

  • No No just have Kett cover the cost from one of his public pensions.

There is the rub!!!! The Audit Committee could not find enough Council members to achieve quorum and recieve the documents from the Auditor General EVEN THOUGH they knew the Statute of Limitations was about to expire on the overdue amount.

  • Oh! as well the money not remitted by the Kiosk operator was $866,000. After the company assets were seized the remaining amount due to the City is approx $600,000........

  • I have no problem with sending this overdue account out for collection IF the organisation DID IN FACT not make every effort to pay its debt. It appears they had 5-6 months to do so or at least present a payment plan.
As a point of clarification every taxpayer made huge contributions to the games that were approved by Council and most Clowncillors also made additional top-ups through our abused slush funds.

Perhaps Mr Kett could have made a contribution from the OCOF fund (Obnoxious Councillor Obstruction Fund)
