The plan to limit idling to one minute is “a good balance between fuel use, emissions and wear on components,” according to Stephen Monet, the city’s manager of environmental planning initiatives.
Now how about this — let’s take the existing bylaw for littering and enforce that. People from all over Canada have asked me why Sudbury is such a dirty city. Have you ever stepped on a cigarette package under some light snow?
Now take the pluses into account. Less stress on health care facilities, less work time losses because of falls, a cleaner city, not to mention a prettier place to visit and less money spent on garbage collection.
Now the pluses on the idling issue. City staff standing around with a stop watch documenting cars all over the city. Oh yeah, the plus? City staff like to stand around accomplishing nothing at the taxpayers’ expense.
