On June 12, 2011, I stood astride my bike on Lakeshore Boulevard in Toronto, waiting with more than 4,600 other cyclists to begin a 230 kilometre trek to Niagara Falls.
Back when I registered for the “Ride to Conquer Cancer,” the idea of biking that distance over two days seemed a little crazy.
Now, as I reflect, it’s hard to believe I will be participating in “The Ride to Conquer Cancer” for the third year, and am rarin’ to go.
When I Googled “cancer fundraising,” back in 2009, I came across this event, which supports The Princess Margaret Hospital. Even though the ride takes place hundred of miles away, I count myself in.
Many northern Ontario residents make the trip to The Princess Margaret for treatment, so helping that hospital helps my community.
Thank you to my family, friends and my community for all your heartfelt and generous support during the fundraising. The response from my entire community has been overwhelming. My colleagues were especially supportive and encouraging. It has been amazing.
Life sometimes unveils unexpected twists and turns, and this cause is dear to my heart, as I’ve lost friends, neighbours and even a cherished pet to cancer, and I had long wanted to support the search for the cure.
During the ride, I joined a group whose bikes boasted yellow flags, indicating that the riders were cancer patients or survivors. It was incredibly humbling to ride alongside those fighting for their own lives as well as those of others. Myself, I rode for everyone, for a cure and for hope.
I have signed up yet once again, and have ramped up my training. I already bike to work and take my dog, Homer, out for long walks, rain or shine or snow. I stepped out of my comfort zone and developed my endurance.
I also, once again, will be starting my campaign, letting my family, friends and coworkers know of my plan. I will be going door-to-door for pledges, and approaching local stores for support. I cannot cure cancer myself, but I can and will join the fight.
The 2011 ride raised more than $16 million for Princess Margaret, which shares its expertise with other cancer centres around the world.
I am thrilled to have been part of that amazing effort and look forward to 2012, another chance to put my pedals where my heart is.
Thank you for your support. Bike in one hand, determination in the other.
