Celebrate Earth Day by making green resolutions - Melanie Johncox

In light of the struggling economy and government deficits, I’m finding less focus lately on environmental issues, both at the political and individual level.

I can say myself that I’m torn sometimes between price and environmental responsibility when out and about shopping. Further, sometimes it seems like the environmental problems are so big that I wonder about the impact I actually make. I’m sure I’m not alone here.

It is certainly not always easy being green. So I propose an idea — Earth Day resolutions.

We make one (or more, if it’s realistic) resolution to do something or make a small change that helps the environment. A few suggestions to get those green juices flowing:

- When getting a coffee at Starbucks and planning to drink it there, get a real mug — they have them in all the sizes.

- Buy big: shampoo, yogurt, wine, etc. It all saves packaging.

- Use a travel mug.

- Make your own smoothies.

- Use vinegar to clean windows, mirrors and glass.

- Buy unpackaged produce.

There are many small changes that can be made. Pick one or pick two and make those your Earth Day resolutions.

And while I’m taking that idea from New Year’s, why not take the celebration part of it too. I’d like to propose a toast to our wonderful, awe-inspiring, beautiful Earth. Happy Earth Day.
