Re: Article “Store hours going to referendum,” which appeared in the Sept. 13 edition of Northern Life.

Surely our council have more important things to discuss than bringing up the Boxing Day and store hours debate again. There just has to be more pressing things for our council to spend their valuable time on.

As for a referendum, what a waste of money. If we have a referendum, please let’s find something much more important to have a referendum on.
Now as for the debate about store hours, has anybody thought about the people at the bottom?

I’m talking about the retail workers, who, for the most part, work for for minimum wage or a few dollars more and have no benefits, no union and no security.

But that’s okay, let’s just dump on them a little bit more.
We never hear about the retail workers, just the much better paid people in our society.

It’s about time we wake up and realize we are all in this life together, so for all the well-paid people who have the time off and the disposable income to shop, please give a thought to the retail workers, because a lot of them are good hard-working people just trying to make ends meet.

So if there is a referendum, please give them a thought and keep in mind that we don’t have to have shops open 24 hours a day or 365 days a year, and please don’t use the line that the retail workers need to work on Boxing Day or 24 hours a day.

Believe me, we will survive if the stores close for a couple of days a year.
