Garbage poses a problem for cottage owner - Deborah Rayner

I am a cottage owner on beautiful Lake Panache. I have been there for more than 50 years. This past weekend, I was told I would be fined if I disposed of my garbage in the dumpsters placed at the marina where I park.

When I called the Sudbury offices, I was told that since my cottage property does not pay taxes to Sudbury, I am not able to use the dumpster, and that I am not even supposed to bring the garbage home to Sudbury to put it at the curb with my household garbage.

Since I pay taxes to Thunder Bay, what does the city expect me to do with my garbage? I don’t think shipping it north is the answer.

I am sure I am not the only camper on the lake with this problem, many of them coming from the States and various regions of the country. If we don’t have a place to leave our garbage, I am sure many people will end up just leaving it at the side of the road or in the bush.

Lake Panache is a popular tourist lake, but it will no longer be beautiful if the city does not come up with a solution for the many campers who fall outside city limits.
