Cell tower unwelcome - Linda and Robert Beauchamp

Have you ever heard the expression a man’s home is his castle? Well in our case, this happens to be true. My husband and I worked 40 years to be able to move to the city in an area that we absolutely love.

Have you ever heard the expression a man’s home is his castle?

Well in our case, this happens to be true. My husband and I worked 40 years to be able to move to the city in an area that we absolutely love. We have invested much time and money in improving our home and landscaping along with our neighbours so that we would have a nice neighbourhood.

We wanted the value of our property to increase, and hence our retirement would be secure. We finally felt that we had overcome many hurdles and that finally we were at a place and time in our lives were we could relax and enjoy the fruit of our labour.

However, last summer we were approached by Bell to see if we would agree to having a cell tower next door at the corner of Bancroft and Levesque Streets. This means that the tower would be approximately 20 feet from my house and an even shorter distance from my property line.

After recovering from the shock my husband and I agreed that this is just a bad idea. After all, once erected, this tower would stick out like a sore thumb.

This monstrosity will be approximately 35 meters high (114 feet high and built in the form of grid) in a residential area where most homes are bungalows. How ugly is that?

All of our planning and hard work down the drain so that a conglomerate such as Bell can make a few extra dollars.

It just doesn’t seem right. Not for us, not for our neighbours and certainly not for any other hard-working person in this city. I want to make everyone aware that what we are seeing is a great injustice to citizens of this community, and it is our right as a democratic society to voice our opinion and to stand up for what is right.

We would very much like everyone’s support in this matter. It could just as well happen to you.
