Councillors behaving childishly - Jody McDonald

Re: Article “Walking papers for André Marin,” which appeared in the Feb. 14 edition of Northern Life.

As I watched tonight’s broadcast of the city’s council meeting, I couldn’t help but shake my head at some of the behaviour I witnessed by certain city councillors, in particular Coun. Joscelyne Landry-Altmann and Coun. Terry Kett.

My heart goes out to Mayor Marianne Matichuk and the rest of council for having to put up with such childish behaviour as was displayed at tonight’s meeting.

It seems like Landry-Altmann and Kett walked into this meeting (and every other meeting) with a chip on their shoulder.

They are not there to assist in making decisions to better our city, but rather to complain about how they have not received advance notice of certain topics that come up during the meeting.

Forgive me if I’m wrong, but I thought the whole idea behind meetings was to discuss topics, not cross your arms and childishly refuse to participate in the discussion because you didn’t receive advance notice.

If you can’t handle an ad hoc topic that comes up in a controlled meeting situation, how will you ever handle an emergency or disastrous situation that our city might face where quick decision and action is needed?

I urge and encourage all citizens of Greater Sudbury to be prepared to fend for yourselves should our city be faced with an emergency or disaster, because to my knowledge, disaster won’t send our councillors an email with advance notice in order for them to make decisions.
