Raise corporate tax rates - Tom Fenske

Editor’s note: The following is an open letter to Premier Kathleen Wynne.

I would like to propose that your new government put in place a temporary increase in the corporate tax rate. If we are all in this together, then we should be asking everyone in the province to do his or her part.

I read yesterday that our banks just made record profits in the first quarter. How do the rest of us in the province tighten our belts when we see organizations such as this doing so well?

I propose we pass legislation that increases the corporate tax rate with an end date that coincides with your plans to eliminate the deficit.

We should also add in an incentive stating that if the budget were to be balanced before the projected end date, then the rates would return back to pre-budget levels.

This would entice companies to think outside the box to help this province get to a balanced budget.

Please take this into consideration when you are drafting your budget. It is ideas like this that will help us all come together and tackle this monster debt.

It is time to separate yourself from the previous government and win back the faith of the people of this beautiful province.
