A comprehensive community guide would feature four main areas. There would be a leisure activities section with recreational listings, outdoor and indoor facilities with events and schedules, sports and recreation organization listing and information on older adult and youth groups and activities.
There would be an arts and culture section with a listing of organizations, groups and events. A civic information section would include bus schedules, community organizations, libraries, Citizen Service Centre locations, local council contacts, waste management and other useful citizen information, plus emergency numbers etc. A tourist and visitor section would list attractions, festivals, museums, plus maps of various areas of the city.
A community guide as described would be a valuable resource for citizens to go to quickly and conveniently.
The guide, in print format, produced and distributed twice yearly, would contain web links for updates between publications and possibly more detailed information in an electronic format. Space for ads would help offset costs.
A number of community groups, including the Social Planning Council, The City Seniors Advisory Panel, Friendly to Seniors – Sudbury and the Sudbury Arts Council have proposed the current leisure guide be expanded to include civic, arts and tourist information.
An example of what the community guide would look like and the suggested content can be found at www.sudburyartscouncil.org.
If you feel this revised and expanded publication would be of value, please contact the city leisure department and also the mayor and your councillor.
