It should read simply “Common Goldeneye,” which is a type of diving duck. There are a number of these around locally due to the Great Lakes freezeup. They frequent large bodies of water in winter.

They are not mergansers. Currently there have been several unusual observations of Red-Breasted Mergansers and Common Mergansers locally, as well, again probably as a result of the freeze up.

They are looking for food in any available open water, i.e. in Junction Creek.
