Letter: Seniors receive 55-cent increase on pensions

If you are a senior citizen you must have noticed the whopping increase of 55 cents on your January old age security pension. Unfortunately, in April, the cost of mailing a couple of letters wiped out this increase.

One has to realize the government needs some money to pay for the gold-plated pensions of the members of parliament, to pay for the moving and travelling expenses of the sleepy chamber members — also known as the Senate — to pay for the extravagant royal visits and to pay for foreign aides to countries that have no regards for the freedom of individuals.

Yes, seniors, consider the 55 cent increase as a gesture of goodwill from your government. If you don’t make too much noise, the next increase may be close to a dollar.

Above all, we don’t want to bother our members of parliament with such a trivial matter as the well being of our seniors. Be happy and keep on hoping.
