Letter: Sudbury Downs’ demise puts spotlight on government mismanagement

Back in 1997, the province of Ontario struck a deal with the horse-racing industry. They made a deal that would allow the race tracks to keep 20 per cent of the profits from slot machines, while the province would keep 80 per cent of this new money to add to its provincial coffers. The new revenue allowed the industry to flourish.

This decision to remove the slot machines has devastated the horse-racing industry.

On May 26, the announcement was made that Sudbury Downs will not operate for the 2014 season.

This Liberal government made another rash, poorly thought-out decision. There is a pattern of mismanagement with this government.

I call on the NDP and the PC party to push for the reinstatement of the slot machine program.
