Letter: Ribfest a success once again

The 7th annual Downtown Sudbury Ribfest has come to a close for another year.

The 7th annual Downtown Sudbury Ribfest has come to a close for another year.

After the tents have come down, the rib teams have packed up and the crowds have gone home, this was another successful Downtown Sudbury event, attracting more than 30,000 over the three-day event.

Downtown Sudbury Ribfest, hosted by Downtown Sudbury (Business Improvement Area), continues to be ranked by the rib teams among the top five events of its kind in Canada.

It achieved that rank in only seven short years, following in the footsteps of larger communities such as London and Burlington, and with a three-day festival (as compared to many that are a full week).

Maureen Luoma, executive director of Downtown Sudbury, said “while attendance was down over last year (when we had over 50,000) due to the weather and rain every day, there was still a very strong and steady turnout.”

Luoma further noted that “we can attribute the success of this event to a full program that offers something for the entire family — live music, family ‘fun zone,’ food, car show and free admission. This year, the ‘Movie Under The Stars’ added a new component.”

Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross Sudbury in support of their many programs in Sudbury and Northern Ontario.

Downtown Sudbury BIA would like to thank the community, sponsors and volunteers for all the continued support to this festival and to making it the success it is.
