Letter: Green bin theft disgusts new Sudburian

After moving from Toronto to Sudbury, my family and myself thought we would be moving to a quiet, respectable city, where the people are friendly, and one could relax and enjoy themselves away from the hustle, bustle, noise and crime from the big city. Boy, were we wrong.

Living in Toronto, we belonged to the city recycle program of blue and green boxes. We would put our boxes out on the curb weekly and then return them to our back yard, where they were kept to fill with recyclable and compost materials.

We have participated in this program for the past 10 plus years. The boxes were always kept at the gate of our yard, which was 30 feet away from the curb, with no name or house number on them. They were yours and people respected that.

Upon moving to Sudbury in June of this year, and after all of the moving in and unpacking, and everything else that goes along with a big move, we noticed that we had blue bins for our recyclable materials, but no green bin for our household compost material.

We contacted the city, and were issued a new green bin. We picked it up and placed it next to our blue boxes by our front door, which to say is 30 feet away from the street.

On a Friday night at 10 p.m., I emptied our household compost material from our house and went outside to place it in the green bin. To my shock my green bin was gone. I asked my wife if she had moved it, and her answer was no, and that just this morning, she had placed some material in it.

We were disgusted, to say the least, to think, that someone on my street, from this so called quiet city, had walked up my driveway, to my front door, in the middle of the night, and stolen my $17 green box, which we only had for two weeks.

To the person that stole this, I really hope you had satisfaction in walking up someone’s private driveway in the middle of the night like a coward to steal this. Ten-plus years in Toronto, and they are still with the new home owners. Two weeks here, and stolen from my front door. Guess our thoughts were wrong about Sudbury.
