Letter: Applause inappropriate at Nov. 11 services

I usually watch the Remembrance Day service from Ottawa, but this year I thought it more appropriate to attend the local ceremonies.
I usually watch the Remembrance Day service from Ottawa, but this year I thought it more appropriate to attend the local ceremonies.

I was moved by the number of people who took time from their busy lives to attend, to pay their respects to the fallen and to the veterans, and to reflect on the fact that our freedom and way of life come at a cost that every generation has to pay in some way.

Therefore, I was surprised when, as the name of each person laying a wreath at the cenotaph was read out, that it was met with significant applause.

What were these people applauding?

In the circumstances, the applause, while perhaps intended as some form of acknowledgment, seemed thoughtless, disrespectful and entirely inappropriate. We applaud entertainment and sporting events and to recognize achievement.

A Remembrance Day service is certainly none of those.

I am sure that every person laying a wreath, particularly the Silver Cross Mother, would gladly give up every form of recognition to have their child, relative or comrade returned home safe and sound.
