Letter: Boxing Day shopping cuts into family time

I am greatly disappointed with city council’s decision to deregulate store hours, specifically on Boxing Day.

One may argue that it will provide employees with the opportunity to work more hours and that it will give stores more control over their hours of operation. However, let’s not forget what Christmas is really about — spending time with friends and family and being thankful for all that we have.

Why do we feel the need to go shopping one mere day after receiving a plethora of gifts and after supposedly being grateful for everything in our lives?

By allowing stores to open their doors on Boxing Day, Sudbury has given into consumerist ideals, moving further away from the strong family-oriented city it once was.

As the daughter of a retail worker, I cannot explain how much I have valued spending Christmas and Boxing Day together with my family.

There is truly no better feeling than being surrounded by the ones you love during the holiday season, and that time may now be cut short for many of us.
