Letter: Can Sudbury’s Boxing Day still be Dec. 27?

From the media reports, we know that many people in Sudbury feel strongly the issue of deregulating store hours should not have come before city council.
From the media reports, we know that many people in Sudbury feel strongly the issue of deregulating store hours should not have come before city council.

In our municipal election, the lack of the required percentage of votes for deregulating store hours mean deregulation was not supposed to happen. That is the democratic system.

The next move would be for store owners, especially the owners of the larger stores, to take the lead. They now have the right to choose their hours. So they can choose to have their Boxing Day event on Dec. 27, as has been the custom for a long time, instead of Dec. 26.

If enough stores did this, they could show their employees and all the Sudburians that they really do care about their employees and would like them to still have the two consecutive days off, Dec. 25 and Dec. 26. It’s a time for families to be together.

If they want to go out of town to be with family or friends on Christmas Day, they have the 26th to get back to Sudbury. Maybe we can continue to celebrate Boxing Day on the 27th and be proud of our heritage.
