Letter: Hosed at the pumps

While many are enjoying the fall of gas prices compared to the summer, nobody seems to notice Sudbury is still paying unfairly high gas prices compared to market value.

Dec. 30 gas prices rose from $0.93 to more than $1, even though there was no market resurgence in oil prices to warrant the increase. Even after New Years, when oil continued its collapse, Sudbury’s prices have remained steady around $1.

As of Jan. 5, local area comparisons show Sudbury has been paying uniquely high prices when compared to:

North Bay - $0.85
Parry Sound - $0.94
Sturgeon Falls - $0.84

After today’s oil prices briefly dropped lower than $50 per share, if gas prices do not adjust to reflect market values, local residents should begin asking for explanations, because as of now the “fix” appears to be in.
