Hire more nurses, not more researchers

Reading last week in regards to Health Sciences North cutting 42 nursing positions, I just had to voice my opinion.
Reading last week in regards to Health Sciences North cutting 42 nursing positions, I just had to voice my opinion.

We’ve had investments from FedNor Minister Greg Rickford of $5 million, on top of the $5 million commitment prior in 2014, and the City of Greater Sudbury’s investment of $1.75 million to Health Science North’s research. In my opinion, Dr. Janet McElhaney will not make Health Sciences North a leader in health care.

The funds received for the research lab extension should be spent on hiring nurses, not cutting back on them, for they are the true leaders of health care. Nurses and doctors are our health care. Hours and hours of unselfish dedication are put into their careers.

Mayor Brian Bigger, along with Denis Roy, CEO of Health Sciences North, stating this expansion will benefit Sudbury as a whole, is contradictory and totally irresponsible in terms of their responsibilities with the positions they hold.

Fifteen thousand square feet, in my opinion, should only be purchased if it benefits Sudbury as a whole.

These funds should be spent on hiring and keeping our nurses and doctors, hospital beds, not more chairs for unwell patients in waiting rooms, young and old, waiting for treatment and possibly a bed.

I hope the 160 people that will be employed enjoy their new chairs in the 15,000 square feet you have decided to purchase for $11.75 million.

Time should be spent researching the meaning of common sense.
