Letter: Separate paths would accommodate cyclists

I read the article on the Transportation Master Plan in your issue of May 21. How naive can a project manager be and completely out of touch with reality? The share-the-road policy is pie in the sky.

I read the article on the Transportation Master Plan in your issue of May 21.

How naive can a project manager be and completely out of touch with reality? The share-the-road policy is pie in the sky.

Everyone wants a venue for cyclists and intersections practical for pedestrians, as well as sidewalks. They tried this “sharing of the road,” and it was a complete failure.

Those who do not know the past are bound to commit the same mistakes.

At that time, the experiment was called “calming Attlee Avenue.” The street, in reality, is a pseudo Barrydowne Road. I can count the number of cyclists that have used their designated path since its inception.

They find it too dangerous because of heavy traffic. Ironically, they use the sidewalk.

The project was a disaster, not to mention the great cost at the taxpayers’ expense.

This master plan will create the most hazardous situation for both motorist and cyclist unless the city can afford extremely wide streets.

Put your money where your mouth is. Create separate paths that will properly accommodate cyclists. By the way, cyclists already have legal access to all roads. A bicycle path will only increase the liability of the motorist.

I hope the new council will be more considerate that the last one.
