Letter: Please exercise caution when quadding, writer urges

Quadding is a lot of fun. It’s a blast to rip through the forest on trails on a quad. It’s refreshing, fun, exciting and gives off quite the adrenaline rush. However, it is dangerous.

If you're planning on going out on your ATV this Victoria Day weekend, wear a helmet and appropriate clothing for your excursion, said the OPP. Supplied photo.

It’s a blast to rip through the forest on trails on a quad. It’s refreshing, fun, exciting and gives off quite the adrenaline rush.

However, it is dangerous. The trail in Naughton is quite close to the highway and those cars on that highway are reaching speeds exceeding 80 km/h. Some are dodging traffic that pulled in front of them, forced to pass or rear end a car that misjudged their approaching speed.

My point is that it’s not a location where one can just pull on the shoulder or look toward just oncoming traffic and pull onto the highway. Right or not, you will not win against a car doing 80-plus kilometres an hour.

Please, to the quad users on that trail, I’m not even sure it’s legal, as I’ve seen signs saying no motorized vehicles allowed (except snowmobiles). Please drive safe and look both ways when approaching Regional Road 55. Those cars can’t stop as easily as you can, and they have a lot more energy. You won’t win.

There have been people killed there on the road because a quad got onto RR 55 in an unsafe manner.
