Candidate clarifies statement on Maley funding

Editor’s note: The following letter is from federal NDP candidate Paul Loewenberg regarding the article, “Raucous night kicks off federal election debate season in Sudbury.” I write to set the record straight with regards to funding of Maley Drive.

I write to set the record straight with regards to funding of Maley Drive.

All candidates were having a problem hearing questions from their colleagues on stage. In fact, the Green candidate made a point of informing the audience of our challenge. I misunderstood the question directed at me with respect to Maley.

So, let me be clear. Tom Mulcair will substantially increase transfers to municipalities for core, local infrastructure projects like the Maley Drive extension.

We are also committed to continuing the New Building Canada Fund, where provinces submit their list of infrastructure priorities.

Media have reported that the Province of Ontario has indeed submitted the Maley Drive extension as a priority infrastructure project under this fund, and the NDP would fund that agreement.

I hope this clarifies any misunderstanding stemming from the recent CBC debate.
