One of only three Canadian stops on a worldwide tour, Cambrian College is opening its doors to classical guitarist Gabriel Bianco of France.
The musician will perform Nov. 25 in the college’s amphitheatre, room 2226, at 8 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for seniors and students.
“Gabriel is young. He is only 22 but he has won a very prestigious award, (first place at) the 2008 Guitar Foundation of America International Competition,” said Brenda Arrowsmith, organizer of the concert and co-ordinator of Cambrian’s School of Music program.
“This is the biggest award in the world for classical guitar. One of the prizes (apart from cash) from the competition is a 50-city tour, mainly in North America, but including some dates in China and Columbia,” she added.
Bianco is about a third of the way through his tour schedule. “We are fortunate to have him at Cambrian College. His only other Canadian performances are in Edmonton and Toronto, I believe,” Arrowsmith said.
Arrowsmith said the young classical guitarist “will enthrall his Sudbury audience with a spell-binding performance.”
Bianco will be performing two sonatas by Bach, transcribed from the violin repertoire, noted Arrowsmith. He will also be performing selections from Fernando Sor, Schubert and Turina.
Arrowsmith said there is a significant following for classical music in Greater Sudbury.
“Sudbury has a new population that wants to hear classical and contemporary repertoires. I expect also to see a lot of former Cambrian College students at the concert Wednesday.”
Tickets are available at the Cambrian College Bookstore, Black Cat, on Durham Street, or by phoning 566-8101 ext. 7766. For more information e-mail brenda.arrowsmith@cambriancollege.ca.
