The Winter issue of Sudbury Living, on newsstands now, features an article on Sudbury athletes who have a chance of participating in the Vancouver 2010 Olympics.

“When the magazine went to press, the team had not been announced,” says Sudbury Living editor Vicki Gilhula. “Northern Life sports editor Laurel Myers writes about figure skater Meagan Duhamel, cross-country skier Devon Kershaw, and hockey players Tessa Bonhomme and Rebecca Johnston who have spent the better part of their young lives preparing for this opportunity.”

Everyone will be caught up in Olympic fever when the Olympic flame arrives in Greater Sudbury in January. The torch will be carried by Alex Baumann, nominated as our community torchbearer to light the celebration cauldron for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic torch relay.

Baumann’s performance at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles earned him two gold medals in the 200m and the 400m IM events, Canada’s first gold medals in swimming in 72 years. Among his many achievements, Baumann received the Order of Canada in 1984 as well as the Order of Ontario in 1988. To welcome the flame, the community is planning a downtown celebration on Jan. 2.

The latest issue of Sudbury Living can be picked up at Chapters, Black Cat and other selected newsstands. Subscriptions are also available. Go to sudburylivingmagazine.com or phone 673-5667.
