Two young Sudbury women have come up with a unique way to raise money for a local organization which promotes breast cancer awareness and helps women with the disease have a better quality of life.
Crystal Larose and Melanie Smith, volunteers with the Breast Action Coalition Sudbury, are selling pink metal lunch boxes for $60 each, with the proceeds going towards the organization.
The lunch boxes are made by a local company called L. May Metal Fabricators Ltd., which makes the classic metal lunch box, commonly used by Sudbury miners, and has now branched out into producing the product in different colours and styles.
She is offering the lunch boxes to the two women for a discounted price for the fundraiser, so that about $30 per box goes towards the Breast Action Coalition Sudbury.
The money raised will go towards the organization's Dragonfly Fund, which is administered by the Northern Cancer Research Foundation.
The money in the Dragonfly Fund is dispersed at the discretion of the supportive care services at the Regional Cancer Program.
Some of the funds are used to buy Dr. Susan Love breast books, which provide information on breast cancer treatment for newly-diagnosed breast cancer patients.
The funds have also been used in the past for things like buying a wig for a woman who had lost her hair because of cancer treatments, and giving money to another breast cancer patient so she could buy Christmas presents for her children.
To purchase one of the pink lunch boxes, phone Larose at 670-4531 or Smith at 920-8097. To learn more about the Breast Action Coalition Sudbury, go to www.breastnorth.info.
