St. Patrick's Day celebrations erupted across the city this week allowing some to partake of the fun at local taverns and community centres.

Despite being on strike for eight months, some Steelworkers came out anyway with their friends to hear Irish tunes and drink green beer at Peddlers, the downtown pub and eatery on Cedar Street. Steelworkers Tom Scott, Chris Harvey and Dave Martin brought along friends Scott Cretien, a lab technician, and Jim Shedden, an ironworker.

“I come out once in awhile,” Harvey said, as he hoisted a green beer with his friends.

“I'm Irish,” said Martin. “I had to come out for St. Patrick's Day. It's like Christmas for the Irish.”

Passerby Tracy Ross walked by and admonished the men for being so spirited and happy.“Stop having so much fun,” she joked. “Being Irish myself I am the one who can have fun.”She sported a t-shirt which said “Naughty Irish Girl”.

Another girl, Janis Murray, passed by with a t-shirt that said “Text Me I'm Irish.”Server Liz Litalien said Peddlers Pub was celebrating its 12th annual St Patrick's Day celebration.“My how time flies,” she exclaimed. She said Peddlers Pub had one of the biggest St. Patrick's Day celebrations in the city.

Owner Dennis Gainer said he noticed numbers were down from past years earlier in the afternoon on March 17, but by six o'clock it was more packed, he said. He speculated it could be the result of the strike. He walked over to the table with the strikers and congratulated them for coming to his establishment.“It has been a great day for us, thanks to people like you,” Gainer said.

Celebrations occurred also at Shaughnessy's, Little Montreal, the Townehouse Tavern and the One-Eleven Seniors Centre on Larch Street.

Wow...the wit of a steelworker has no end...
    just like the strike
    :)

  • these "highly educated and well respected members of the community"(can you say Local 6500?) are drinking green beer.......no doubt paid for by their Iron Worker and Lab Tech friends, while Fera is eating the finest entrees and drinking the best wines at The Idyllwyld. Noblesse Oblige

  • sudsatnight, how about a detailed description of what local "winners" look like? I see no relevance pointing out those who choose to stay where they grew up. What if they are originally from White River? Does it make them lesser "losers" ?
To me, they look like everyday Gen Y, who could be working for anybody doing any job.
Seriously, why is there so much hate towards these guys? They are on strike. Support them or not, your choice, but there's no need to come online and continually bash people for whatever reason.
This has been going on for like a year in our local media and it is getting rather monotonous.
Last point - Why is this even a story? So a few miners went out for a beer...who cares? Will they stop the press if one of them orders the soup of the day too?

if they found employement elsewhere...then they should quit.
Otherwise, it just proves that they are local losers who think they are entitled...

but then...thats what they really are isn't it.

  • So.......

These are the highly educated and well respected members of the community...
Funny...they look alot like local losers who spent their entire life just waiting for their entitlements so would never have to leave their home town and actually make something of themselves....

    Oh...wait..

    They are steelworkers...I forgot...

  • MAT, another pathetic comment with no other purpose than to attack those from a union, any union.
How do you know if the guys in the picture were lined up for backpacks or coloring books? Furthermore, i hughly dount anybody but yourself and a few others with no life would actually start a scrap book detailing the misery of the strike only to bring it up later and throw it in their face. What a sad life you must live....
Judging by the picture, i would guess they are too young to be sitting on fat bank accounts and have found employment elsewhere. Good for them if that is the case.

  • Remember, these same 'poor' strikers lined up for free backpacks from the United Way and Christmas colouring books from the hospital.

Remember this photo Sudburians when Gerard, Fraser, and Fera cry how their members are starving and the families suffering because of the strike. Clip this out and save it. Put it next to that USW family, article seen sitting boo-boo faced in front of their $400,000 home and can't pay the mortgage.

Priorities and a dog-and-pony show from a proud union.

  • If anyone knows how to get drunk and disorderly, its the good old union boyz from 6500.

  • Wow, this is supposed to be news worthy. What are we up to now, 2 and 3 stories a day that really don't tell us anything different or are even news worthy?
