The band came together in the summer of 2009. Guitarist Steve Costello and drummer Dustin Campbell had been friends for years and played together in other bands. When bassist Kory Hawes and vocalist Kelsey Aho joined them, the lineup was complete.
The four teenagers from Sudbury each come from different musical backgrounds, and they produce a unique sound when they’re together, Costello said. Despite the differences, they are highly focused on working towards a common goal.
During an average week, the band spends about 12 hours together from Monday to Friday, and as much time as possible on weekends.
Costello said spending so much time together often makes “some weird psychic stuff happen” between the group.
“We either love each other or hate each other.”
In the coming months, Donnelly said he plans to introduce the group’s sound to industry professionals, in the hope of attracting attention in big ways.
“We’re going to push it as hard as we can,” Donnelly added. “We want everyone in Canada to hear this CD.”
Costello added: “We’re not just a bunch of kids messing around.”
Mayday Mother’s self-titled album was released on May 1, which coincidentally happens to be May Day in the United States. The seven-track album was written exclusively by the band.
“These guys are really strong writers,” Donnelly said.
He said the group has a lot of natural talent, and their “fresh, cutting edge” sound has already been well-received in Sudbury.
“I haven’t seen too many bands around here that can do what they can do. People are connecting to it.”
The album took about five months to come together from start to finish.
“It was actually a fast project,” Donnelly said.
“When you have the right team setup, it can happen quickly.”
Although the group has their eyes set on the big leagues, Costello said no amount of success would tear them from their roots.
“We’re a Sudbury band,” he said. “It’d be neat if something cool came out of Sudbury.”
Mayday Mother has already hosted its official CD release party at Little Montreal, and is planning a few more similar events.
A tentative release party is planned for June 12 at Records on Wheels, and a show is scheduled for July 10 at Shaughnessy’s Pub and Grill.
“Try to catch them before they’re off to the big times,” Donnelly said.
