Students from Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario will hear what war time service is about from a local doctor and author who was in Afghanistan for two tours of duty, a release from the school board said.
Dr. Ray Wiss will share his personal experience as a medical doctor in the Canadian military with high school students Nov. 8 at 8:40 a.m at Collège Notre-Dame, 100 Lévis St. This will be followed by a presentation at École secondaire du Sacré-Coeur, 261 Notre-Dame Ave. at 10:15 a.m.
He is recognized as a doctor who introduced ultrasound technology into Canadian emergency medical practice.
Dr. Wiss kept a diary of his time in Afghanistan in 2007 that was published as FOB Doc: A Doctor on the Front Lines in Afghanistan. Following his second posting there, he produced the book entitled A line in the Sand: Canadians at War in Afghanistan.
Since returning to Canada, Dr. Wiss has rejoined the Emergency Services team at the Sudbury Regional Hospital as trauma team leader and is also an associate professor at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.
