As Pat Migwans played aboriginal songs on her drum, students from St. David Catholic School sang along.
Tying traditional teachings to fun activities was the basis of the National Aboriginal Day celebration held at O'Connor Park.
Local aboriginal educator Will Morin, who also acted as the event's MC, said the day was designed to “assist in exposing young children to the culture.”
Through games, dancing, storytelling and other activities, Morin said he hoped kids would be inspired to continue learning and discovering aboriginal culture.
“My hope is they gain the appreciation and the awareness that aboriginal culture is inviting and welcoming, that they are not scared away from learning more,” he said.
Jim Eshkawkogan, co-ordinator of the 19th annual celebration at O'Connor Park, said the day began with a welcoming ceremony.
“I believe that it is very important for people to give thanks for the day – it's something we do in native culture every day,” he said.
The celebration was hosted by the Aboriginal Best Start Hub at Better Beginnings Better Futures.
