Seven youth, ages 14-18, from Big Brothers Big Sisters will share what they know about climate change through drama, dance and song at Northern Lights Festival Boreal this weekend. They will use a solar powered microphone at the Children’s Tent, and if the sun is shining, they will cook food in a solar oven in their education tent in Greenville.
The youth will make their demonstrations throughout the festival, being held at Bell Park July 9 and 10.
The youth have been guided chiefly by their Big Brothers Big Sisters caseworker Audrey Wagemann, and Laurentian University Let’s Talk Science volunteer Kayla Cornthwaite, with a little help from Cathy Orlando, Climate Project Canada presenter and Let’s Talk Science co-ordinator at Laurentian University. The three women are all are Citizen Climate Lobbyists and members of the Sustainable Earth Club at Laurentian University.
In discussions at Citizens Climate Lobby meetings, Wagemann, Cornthwaite and Orlando decided they would empower youth to speak about the current state of the planet and share their hopes at the Northern Lights Festival Boreal using arts as their medium of expression and solar technology to amplify their voices, a press release stated.
“These youth fill me with hope,” Orlando said. “When I shared the current scientific data about climate change and how difficult it is for politicians to act on the climate issue without public support, they were filled with intention to preserve their future climate. They know what is at stake but that there are solutions too.”
