Twenty-two kids of Italian descent took part in the Italian Youth Contest, held July 8 during the Italian Festival. Three of the entrants were selected by a panel of judges to represent the Italian community at community celebrations, Caruso Club functions and charitable events.

This year’s winners include Ms. Caruso (Cerina Furlani), Mr. Caruso (Jordan Rocca) and Little Ms.Caruso (Sydney Cimino). The winners were selected based on their stage presence and public speaking skills, as well as their knowledge of their Italian heritage. Benita Dellelce, contest co-ordinator, said many contestants transform and grow as individuals when they take part in the contest. “It’s everyone’s thing to personally develop,” she said. “It’s a way (for youth) to challenge themselves and build individuality.”

The free contest was open to youth aged five to 19 from Greater Sudbury.
