Growing up, Kassie Tyers had trouble sleeping.

The 23-year-old Sudburian would worry and fret to the point that she was drained emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually.

Based on her research, she’s certainly not alone. About 40 per cent of Canadians admit to having trouble sleeping, she said.

When one friend told her she couldn’t rest because her thoughts were “tormenting her,” Tyers decided to write a song about it. After all, Tyers had already released a self-titled album by that point.

The track she wrote for her friend, combined with even more conversations with people who have trouble sleeping, gave birth to the idea of releasing an album consisting solely of lullabies.

“People who have trouble sleeping are listening to (the album), and it’s helping them fall asleep,” she said. “I’m not saying this is the cure to people’s sleeping problems, but it helps.”

In the song “Goodbye”, Tyers sings: “Fear, you need to leave, pack up your bags and go home.”

She wanted to get rid of the fear that kept her up at night.

One of the other songs on Tyers’ newest album, Sing You To Sleep, was written for her sister, who struggled with chronic fatigue. “I just didn’t understand it — she would sleep for 14 hours a day,” she said. “It really broke my heart.”

On Oct. 21, Tyers is hosting a CD release party for her latest album at Glad Tidings. The CD, which was recorded in Winnipeg, features 10 tracks written by Tyers.

“I’m dreaming big for this,” she said. “I pray that every person who listens to this CD will really feel (at) peace.

“I want to encourage them with some of my life stories, and other people’s life stories.”
Growing up, Tyers said she was never particularly interested in singing. When she began playing guitar, which she enjoyed more, she found herself on her church’s worship team. Eventually, she was asked to take on bigger roles in songs, which included singing.
“What do you know?” she asked. “I ended up loving it.”

Now that she has released two albums, Tyers said she’d like to think about a cross-country tour and begin penning a children’s album.

Working as a helper at Glad Tiding’s SonRise day care, Tyers said she sees how exhausting it can be to work with kids all day, and wants to give workers another tool to help make their job easier.

“I like to help people,” she said. “It’s a bit of an obsession.”
