More shoppers than ever are accepting hybrid vehicles as a way to reduce their environmental footprint and cut down on fuel consumption.

Recent hybrid offerings from various manufacturers are new to the market and relatively unproven, but Toyota lays claim to pioneering and perfecting gas/electric hybrid technology and selling more units worldwide than any other brand.

In fact, the Japanese automaker recently announced that global cumulative sales of its hybrid vehicles have topped the three-million mark, with more than 3.03 million units sold worldwide as of the end of February. Nearly 53,000 of these were sold to Canadian shoppers.

Toyota’s success in marketing hybrids around the globe can be partially attributed to a policy of making environmental issues a management priority. Toyota also believes that environmentally considerate vehicles only do their job through wide-spread use — which is why the brand builds value and confidence into every hybrid they build. After years of sales success, Toyota believes that hybrid vehicles are starting to enter the mainstream.

Continual innovation and expansion of the Toyota hybrid vehicle lineup has resulted in one of the most comprehensive hybrid vehicle offerings available in today’s marketplace. Currently, Toyota offers numerous hybrid models, including special variants of their Camry sedan and Highlander SUV, alongside the iconic Prius—which was recently updated for the 2011 model year.

“The Toyota Prius is the vehicle that made advanced power and performance and low emissions a reality for drivers in Canada and around the world — and it’s still the hybrid to beat, with an enviable track record for performance, reliability, efficiency and owner satisfaction,” Warren Orton, director at Toyota Canada Inc., said. “Canadian drivers looking to make a difference in their environmental footprint while enjoying all the benefits of an advanced technology mid-size passenger car will find a perfect match with the 2011 Toyota Prius.”

Toyota also markets numerous hybrids under their premium “Lexus” division, which offers a pair of hybrid-only models, as well as hybrid-powered variants of their luxury sedans and crossovers.

In addition to the reduction in fuel consumption and emissions, Toyota’s hybrid technology also enables a performance boost, thanks to its high-torque electric motors. Owners can expect reduced fuel consumption, increased acceleration, and no compromise to the driving experience.
