Remember Melanie's Loveseat? I wasn't very old in the '90s, but I remember singing along to the chorus of Something's Missing every time it came on the radio. I could still (sort of) hum along to it when I listened to it online moments ago.
Turns out Mike Large, the group's drummer, would be one of Sudbury's music scenes prominent figures that I would find myself interviewing on a semi-regular basis once I grew up and got a big-girl job.
He was a staple at Music and Film in Motion for a decade before branching out with other MFM members to start Copperworks Consulting. The whole time, though, he stayed focused on promoting northern talent.
“Music was the only thing I knew,” he said.
What makes his story so much more interesting, as far as I'm concerned, is that he's done it all from northern Ontario.
While many feel the need to leave small towns to pursue big dreams, Large has other ideas.
“We never know when the next John Lennon is going to be found in Timmins or Sudbury,” Large said.
He's got a cool story and some amazing insights — to hear more of it, tune in to tonight's episode of The Episode.
If you do, you'll also be treated to a breathtaking performance by guitarist and vocalist Justine Giles. This beautiful little lady also has a cool story, beyond her music.
You'll also get to meet Andrea Solski — she joined The Episode crew the same time I did. She recently had the chance to check out one of The Laughing Buddha's famous beer-tasting events, and lived to tell a sweet story about it.
As for me? Well, I got to meet a very special member of The Episode team. She doesn't come around often, so I feel pretty lucky to have gotten to meet her.
Cousin Lorraine is a pretty little thing, and my gosh, can she work it on a runway. Benita Dellelce, co-ordinator of the upcoming Northern Model Search, couldn't even find words to improve her moves (not that she would have listened, anyway). Jaw-dropping good looks and killer swagger must be par for the course when your last name is McLaren.
Tune in to have a laugh, learn about the incredible things happening in this city and be blown away by the talented people that live in it.
Or tune in and roll your eyes at the antics of a bunch of kids trying to make a go of local TV.
Either way, tune in.
The Episode will be on Eastlink (channel 10) at 10 and 11 p.m. tonight, as well as Monday. You can also catch it online at theepisode.ca.
We'd also love to see you at a live taping — swing by SRO Night Club tonight (Feb. 2) at 7:30 p.m. to meet comedian Michael Emond and hear a live performance by Weatherly. You may even win something passionately sweet to give to your Valentine.
